Avalon is an Earth-like planet located in the outer rim of the galaxy. It is the second planet from its sun, and has two orbiting natural satellites, Arthur and Gwynivere. Its sun, dubbed Alpha Ishtari, is a G-class star of similar heat and color to the Earth's sun. Before the Crinoor invasion, its inhabitants numbered about 300 million human souls, though probably only one-third now remain on the planet.

History

Avalon was discovered and settled by human colonists who came upon it in the late 19th Century. Believing that Doomsday was upon Earth, the colonists somehow fled their homeworld, coming to Avalon to found a new homeland for their people. Though the people of Avalon lived in relative peace and harmony for four decades, the unified government soon collapsed, leaving a patchwork of city-states and small nations scattered around the planet.

The disjointed state of the planet made the attack and blockade of the planet all the easier. The Crinoor sacked and pillaged the planet's many cities, including New Damascus, and drove the humans underground in the hopes that they would cave in and give the Crinoor their supplies of precious metals and stones.[1] However, Avalon's humans held to their pride, awaiting a prophesied savior known as the Sacred Warrior.[2]

A decade later, Gruekiller and his entourage crash-landed on the planet after fleeing Transatlasian forces.[3][4] Upon discovering the population of humans dwelling below the surface in the refugee center of Camp Hope,[5][1] Gruekiller promised to help defeat the Crinoor and liberate the planet.[2] After a brief battle aboard Admiral Kluth's flagship, Gruekiller lured the occupational fleet into an asteroid field at high speed, destroying it and returning the planet to human control for the first time in a decade.[6]

Avalon is a relatively young planet, as evinced by the low but jagged mountain ranges running across its surface. Many volcanic tubes and caverns run throughout the planet's crust, almost all of them interconnecting in some way. Diamonds are common on Avalon due to its volcanic history, and the priceless metal Ununpentium is found in moderate amounts near the surface.[1]
