Yes, the way I see it, if your gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style? Besides, the stainless steel construction makes the flux dispersal- LOOK OUT!!

—Dr. Brown

The DeLorean time machine was Doctor Emmett Brown's most successful invention, a plutonium-powered time machine comprised of a DeLorean DMC-12 sports car that had to reach 88 miles per hour in order to time travel. On November 5, 1955, Doc slipped on his toilet while hanging a clock in his bathroom. When he came to, he had a vision of the flux capacitor in his head. It was constructed afterward and completed in 1985.

Unlike the TARDIS (or in the DYOS case, Kan's TARDIc), the machine remains at the exact same geographic location when traveling between time, though the car is technically still moving due to it's inertia after speeding up to 88 MPH. The car has to travel to a desired geographical location. either by itself or hauled via a larger transport (e.g. spaceship, train, etc).

Equipment

This is what makes time travel possible.

—Doc Brown

The heart of the machine is it's flux capacitor. The device itself sits behind the passenger seats of the DeLorean. Inside the device held three flashing incandescent lamps arranged in a "Y" pattern. In order to travel through time, the vehicle integrated with the flux capacitor needed to be traveling at 88 mph (140.8 km/h), and required 1.21 gigawatts of power (1,210,000,000 watts).

Time circuits

The time circuits are an integral part to its functionality. They were coupled with an input device and a display. The display was divided into three sections: Destination Time (red), Present Time (green), and Last Time Departed (yellow). The user simply inputs there destination time on the keypad in a mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm format. For example, to set the time to May 15, 2003 at 2:10 p.m., the user would punch in 051520031410.

The limitations of the time circuits include the Y10K bug and years in B.C. or B.C.E. cannot be reached. Meaning that the DeLorean can travel between January 1, 0 00:00[1] to December 31, 9999 23:59. It's assumed that the circuits run on the Gregorian calender. So conversion from old style (Julian) to new style (Gregorian) is highly recommended.

Flying abilities

To make the car fly, a hover conversion was applied. Unlike Star Wars repulsorcraft, which operated strictly on repulsorlift engine. The ones fitted on the DeLorean enabled it to either operate between the traditional wheeled vehicle or fold it's wheels down when in flight. With repsulsorlift technology readily available in the Republic, it was relatively easy for Marsha Conrad to add in respulsorlift onto CivGeneral's car. Unlike the film's counterpart where the hover conversion and time circuits were not available until sometime in the 2010s.

CivGeneral's Model

Marsha, we'll have a little talk about 'pimping my car out'

—CivGeneral

Initially, the car was an unmodified DeLorean DMC-12 with automatic transmission and a better engine. Marsha Conrad gotten her hands on some of Dr. Browns plans to modify his car into a time machine. Both CivGeneral's car and the DeLorean of Back to the Future are almost identical. Except with CivGeneral's DeLorean, it has been fully converted to run on fusion power from an on-board reactor (similar to the cars in Fallout 3).

The unique feature in CivGeneral's DeLorean is an addition of a security lock which is required to engage the time circuits in which a special key is required. Any sort of lock-picking will break the lock itself thus disabling the switch needed to engage the time circuits. The rationale behind this sort of security feature is to prevent the theft of the vehicle to travel in time without the owner's consent and the sensitive issue of time travel.

Stylesrj's Model

Wait, we have a DeLorean?

Rosalina Sunburst on hearing about it

Stylesrj by strange coincidence has his own DeLorean in a storage bay of the Comet Observatory. The car is much like the car from the movie, except that the time travel equipment in it is non-functional and the only actual purpose it seems to serve is that the driver can pretend they're in a time machine.

The DeLorean also comes with a rocket booster at the back to allow it to travel through space, but it has no hover conversion mode. It also has a Lazy Beam installed and is reinforced to withstand highly crushing pressure.

Behind the scenes

  • CivGeneral's DeLorean bears a license plate of his home state of Connecticut.
  • CivGeneral reskins this model the most, largely due to changing the display on the time circuits.
