The G-Man is a key, yet mysterious and enigmatic character in the Half-Life series. Referred to as a "sinister interdimensional bureaucrat", he is known to display peculiar behavior and capabilities beyond that of a human and his identity and motives remain almost completely unexplained. He plays the role of an overseer watching over other characters as the series progresses, occasionally offering covert aid to CivGeneral and his party.

Role in the DYOS Universe

The G-man originally appeared as an 'Easter Egg' character glimpsed in the background, occasionally leaving behind useful equipment akin to his appearances in Half-Life. He plays a more important role late in DYOS 10 where he summons both CivGeneral and Samus Aran to brief them about what to expect on returning home. He also took Alyx Vance and placed her in stasis "for her own safety", under the rationale that she might have emulated Mara Jade and sought revenge for being replaced as his avatar.[1][2] A similar intervention occurs in DYOS 11 when the G-man's intervention saves Samus from imminent death.[3] As such, CivGeneral calls him "Bus man G-man".

This logic proves inconsistent, however, as the G-man did not interfere with Major Kusanagi, who was not only a former avatar but also CG's effective self-portrayal in DRAW Your Own Story 5. Moreover, after explaining to Pul Wat Aa why he couldn't return Samus, he then gave her to the Hacker to stage a grudge-match with CG's new love Jill Valentine.[4] The G-man eventually gave up playing chaperone, releasing both Alyx and Samus later in the story.[5][6]

During the Battle of Nar Kreeta in DYOS 11, Rhiza Kalanin ends up fighting Pul Wat Aa in a call-back to Samus's disappearance. The Hacker announces Rhiza will be hacked out of existence and "there's not a thing the G-man can do about it", to which the G-man admits he only saves CivGeneral's characters.[7] The G-man was also used as a plot device later on to send Qara Avethokastar and Martha Shepard further back in time during Alternate 2011.[8]

Behind the Scenes

While the G-man appeared as early as DRAW Your Own Story 7, CivGeneral was amused posters only began commenting on him in DYOS 11 during CivGeneral's Why hasn't x been making comics lately, hiding rather conspicuously behind a potted plant as a spoof of his seeming omnipresence. He was featured extensively in the background every couple of comics since CivGeneral's transition to Garry's Mod machinomics from DYOS 10–11, and also cameoed in several pages by the Styles Brothers.
