— Obi-Wan Kenobi on Zebes
"Planet Zebes... I called this place home once, in peaceful times, long before evil haunted the caverns below."
Samus Aran

Zebes was a planet in orbit around the sun FS-176 and habitat of the devious Zebesian Space Pirates and Mother Brain. Zebes has occasionally been mistranslated as "Zebeth" due to the fact that "s" and "th" make the same sound in Japanese pronunciation, though it has been confirmed that the planet's official name is Zebes. Zebes was the locational setting of the original Metroid, its enhanced remake, Metroid: Zero Mission, and Super Metroid. According to Metroid Prime, Zebes had a mass of 4.8 trillion teratons and is in the same system as Oormine II, Twin Tabula, Bilium, and Tallon IV. Samus Aran was raised on Zebes by Chozo after her home on the Earth colony, K-2L, was destroyed by Space Pirates.

Geology, geography, flora & fauna

"Stay out of Crateria during a rainstorm, unless you want a battery acid shower."
— Anonymous Spacer
"What a desolate place this is."
― C-3PO

Zebes had a vast network of underground caverns and labyrinths that led deep into the planet. Strangely, a deep cavernous area in the planet known as Brinstar seemed to be the home of more than 60% of the planet's wildlife. Brinstar was home to a dense forest, yet the vegetation didn't seem to have anything to photosynthesize. Perhaps the plants only needed water, or maybe the majority were carnivorous as indicated by the foliage in Lower Brinstar. It is also possible that Brinstar plants use chemosynthesis.

Another strange fact is the existence of huge deposits of water just below the surface. Labeled Maridia, the water from this realm spiraled in all directions, eating away at the land, creating huge and sometimes dangerously vast mazes of water. The ground "liquefied" in some areas and formed deadly quicksand traps leading deeper into the planet.

Crateria is the crust of Zebes. It is constantly hit by acid rain.

Life

"Have you ever seen such a magnificent species?"
― Black Mesa biologist

Life on Zebes was very diverse, ranging from huge animals made entirely of molten rock, to small flying creatures that generate their own light, illuminating the entire room. Life was abundant; one could sit down on a rock, and seconds later have it scurry away from under them. The remains of a strange civilization had also been found, indicating that there was once a strong civilization on the planet, however, no live specimens were ever found.

History

Chozo Civilization

Lost Planet & Pirate Infestation

"Err yeah, I heard about Zebes. Some forgotten planet off Space Route 66, 6 parsecs away from Arrakis, over"
― Anonymous Space Trucker

Zebes had been widely forgotten after the Chozo retreated into seclusion, around the same time Samus had been adopted into their society.

Space Truckers and traders tend to avoid the planet due to the hazards of the outer rim territories which are plagued by Space Pirates, who routinely prey on small cargo ships and unarmed, unescorted heavy bulk freighters venturing too far from Space Route 66.

During this phase in Zebes's history, the Space Pirates used the planet as their base of operations with Mother Brain in command. Samus traveled to the planet twice, once to rid the planet of the Metroids, and again to destroy Mother Brain (twice). Unlike in Super Metroid, in the DYOS universe the self-destruct sequence was activated but failed to trigger, leaving a functioning planet buster that presents a strategic hazard to future occupiers.

Greater German Space Reich

After the conclusion of the Combine-Coruscant War, the Greater German Space Reich began a campaign of invading and capturing any Galactic Federation-held planets before embarking on the wholesale conquest of the Republic of Coruscant. The Space Nazis faced little resistanc from the garrisoned Galactic Federation troopers deployed after their capital planet Daiban was captured. The Space Nazis, acting on the ideals of a pure human-centric ideology, eradicated the last remaining Chozo species.

Utilizing Urthic Ore, the Greater German Space Reich built numerous bunkers and command chambers and refitted derelict Space Pirate chambers to establish a command post as a launching base into the Mid-Rim territories (of which Earth is located in). Within the network of bunkers and chambers, the Space Nazis under the direction of Dr. Zimmer constructed Mother Brain 2.0 using scrap and salvaged equipment for the Combine Bloc's logistics computer.

The Greater German Space Reich were unaware that they occupied a planet with an undetonated planet buster under their feet; either Mother Brain deliberately withheld the information or the imported GlaDOS software overwrote the information.

As the Third Nazi War progressed, Zebes was eventually liberated by General Veers. The offensive unknowingly caused wide-scale cave-ins, burying many subterranean command networks and Space Nazi personnel. While the Space Nazis succumbed to a slow death, Mother Brain 2.0 remained operational and continued to serve as the extensive Nazi-Combine military command nexus well past the end of the Third Nazi War.

The Hax Crisis

Main article: Mission to Zebes

The planet became a flashpoint once again after Mother Brain 2.0 was found to still be operating, serving as a relay between the Hacker and the Combine Teleport Complex on Nar Kreeta. Even though the planet itself was by then in the Republic's hands, Space Pirates under directives by the Hacker kept constant check on Mother Brain 2.0 beneath a cloak of seclusion while the Republic operated the many ore mining facilities. It was not until the arrival of CivGeneral and Samus Aran that Mother Brain 2.0 was finally destroyed along with a lone Space Pirate capital ship, dubbed the Space Pirate Mothership. Fortunately, the planet buster embedded within the core has not been activated thanks in part to CivGeneral's quick termination of any external connections to Mother Brain 2.0. To this day, many Coruscanti miners on Zebes have been on high alert to keep an eye out for the planet buster and take it off the planet as soon as possible.
