DYOS Wiki:Dead images
From DYOS Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to searchAs a wiki for an online comic, most citations will usually link to posts containing an image file. Over time, these files may no longer work due to one of several reasons:
- In 2008, the CivFanatics download database was hacked, wiping all comics uploaded as attachments (except from the very early threads, when uploads were hosted at civfanatics.net).
- ImageShack had a history of images breaking over time for no clear reason.
- In June 2009, it was hacked by the so-called Antisec Movement; while the group claimed no permanent damage to user files, some comics uploaded around that time had to be replaced.
- In February 2012, ImageShack revised its policy on free accounts, deleting all but the 500 most recent uploads.
- In October 2015, it revised its policy again, eliminating free accounts and wiping anonymous uploads.
- Prior to 2015, Imgur would delete images from basic accounts if they had not been viewed for three months; it is unknown if any DYOS comics were affected, but there have been instances where URLS to (presumed) expired images were recycled for new uploads.
- Some time between 2015 and 2016, Photobucket forcibly rescaled Stylesrj's comics for DYOS XII to a maximum height of 1024px, shrinking them into illegibility. Comics from previous threads were unaffected.
- In June 2017, Photobucket revised its terms of service, disabling hotlinking for free accounts. It reversed course in late 2018, but watermarks hotlinks instead.
- postimages.org has gone through several name-changes since its creation; in 2018 it changed the linking URL from "postimg.org" to "postimg.cc", but has not applied an automatic redirect.
- Manual deletion by the author, not counting express retractions and reorganization:
- Symphony D. deleted all his contributions to DRAW Your Own Story 10 about a year after his appearance.
- Comics by taillesskangaru hosted on DeviantArt circa 2013 were later manually deleted without a replacement host; he terminated his entire account in 2018.
When citing a post with a broken image, include {{dead image}}. This will automatically add the page to an appropriate maintenance category, and help the original poster repair the archive.
