The T-65 X-wing starfighter is an all-purpose strike craft designed by Incom Corporation. Originally intended for the Galactic Empire, the design team defected to the Rebel Alliance following the capture of the planet Fresia, and the X-wing would become the predominant fighter of the rebel forces. It is best remembered as the ship that destroyed the Death Star.
The X-wing was a direct successor to the Z-95 Headhunter, featuring improvements upon the design of the ARC-170, also built by Incom. It was a superior design to the Empire's TIE fighters; notably, the X-wing is equipped with a hyperdrive allowing travel through hyperspace without the need of support craft. It can accommodate a variety of weapons loadouts, such as proton torpedoes and concussion missiles. The X-wing is operated by a single pilot and an astromech droid to monitor the ship's integrity, provide in-flight repairs, and act as autopilot.
While considered a staple starfighter, prior to Mariko's Coup X-wings were not as commonly fielded by the Republic of Coruscant as was the TIE series, possibly to reserve them for veteran pilots. During the civil war, X-wings saw greater use both in space and planetside; a special variant for the Air Force and Navy, designated the FS-65D, substitutes the laser cannons with missile racks and replaces the torpedo tubes with a dual M2 machine gun.
