Hitler Reviews is a series of Downfall Parodies by Thorvald of Lym in which Adolf Hitler reviews topics suggested by the DYOS audience. Originally conceived as a sister project to a hand-drawn review series similar to other contributors' mailbag segments, it was first announced in a pilot episode aired August 2016 in DYOS XII,[1] with the first review following 4 September.[2]
Format
The opening sequence, voiced by Helmuth Weidling, consists of a montage of Hitler ranting, followed by a fade-in to the main programme in media res with a superimposed intertitle listing the topics for the episode. The first episode begins with the characters addressing the camera, but later episodes open straight in conversation. A staff member introduces a topic for review submitted by the DYOS readership. Depending on the subject, Hitler responds with a rant, a pithy summary, and/or an in-depth analysis, sometimes provoking debate with the officers present. His reviews with Albert Speer tend to be more heartfelt, although even these may be satirically exaggerated, such as the review of Dave the Toothbrush.[2]
Episode 3 is a dramatic departure from form, running at nearly 20 minutes, more than double the length of previous episodes. It features numerous scenes between the Bunker staff without Hitler present, as well as characters within Berlin at large, that form an overarching pseudo-plot by which the reviews are organized.[3]
