Voltaire is a character created by Taniciusfox. He was one of the Hacker's lackeys, before being left by dead by his boss. Since then, he has had a change of heart, and now has sided with Silho, despite it once being his life's goal to kill the latter.

Origin

In real life, Voltaire was designed to represent Virtual High School as part of a mascot contest. As the school never got back to TF, however, he was instead turned into a fictional character for future use due to TF liking his design.

In TF's original works, Voltaire was created by the Liomati faction as part of a genetic research project. He was but one of many creations. As a result of this, Voltaire technically has DNA from many species, but has the appearance of a hedgehog.

Silho was the first successful project of the Liomati; after his escape, several weaker, but still potent creations were made: Voltaire was one of them. Whereas Silho was themed around perfection in combat, Voltaire was built to be able to manipulate energy, especially electricity.

Abilities

Voltaire is fairly athletic, but is nowhere near as strong as his older sibling, Silho. While he may lack Silho's many metallic implants, he certainly has his fair share of powers: he can make energy based attacks and has fairly limitless use of this power. He can harvest electrical currents directly into his body, his anatomy built to make him immune to electrocution. He can alter the makeup of the currents in the air for various purposes, from giving him a boost of speed à la a magnet train, or shooting bolts of lightning between the sky and ground. When Menokium is in his body, he can generate electric bolts from his body at will in a discharge; he loses this power if he has no Menokium and no external source of energy such as sapped electricity stored up inside.

Voltaire has two weaknesses: like all the Liomati projects, he needs the substance Menokium or else he loses much of his power (such as the regeneration ability most projects share). Another is that he shorts out if he's doused in water, making him incredibly vulnerable. Without Menokium, he is still fairly dangerous as he can still absorb energy, but he no longer has an internal reservoir, making his powers less potent.

Personality

If anyone once said the truest form of evil was a child, they must have encountered Voltaire. His mind is quite immature and his overall mentality is a mess: he acts like a child and is prone to the appropriate behavior, but at the same time has the ability and occasional desires of a cold-blooded killer. One moment he'll be playing with children and the next moment he'll murder their parents without a second thought.

Accordingly, however, Voltaire has a rarely-seen gentle side. It isn't known how to tap into this side, however, as the only people he ever cared for were several other projects... all of whom are now deceased.

This softer side was revealed when his deceased elder sibling Florence appeared to him in a dream. Voltaire was naturally overwhelmed, and his many emotions - even sorrowful anger, doubt and regret - were all made apparent by Florence's words.

It was revealed Voltaire isn't really evil so much as he wants to belong to something; he no longer has his three brothers and furthermore, his creators "betrayed" him by not agreeing to his hunting down Silho. He went rogue to try and murder Silho himself, and just now realises that it won't fill the void as he'll just be even more alone without any fellow experiments.

Role in DYOS

Voltaire's first "appearance" was when the Hacker impersonated him in order to talk with Eggman. Later, Voltaire was revealed to be one of the Hacker's henchman, having collected and analysed the data the Hacker stole from Eggman. As punishment for also slipping in a Rule 34 picture of the Hacker and Voltaire, he was sent to Mobius to scout it and keep an eye on events there while Eggman was away.

True to his immature, mood-swinging nature, Voltaire was seen making lame puns by singing fire-related music, all the while burning Mercia's cities and towns with his electric powers. According to Rob O' the Hedge, he had already destroyed plenty of settlements singlehandedly by the time Silho, Shadow and Tanicius arrived.

Voltaire and Silho then engaged in battle, their historical enmity fairly easy to see.

Voltaire seemed calm at first, but his inner insanity quickly showed; he fired lightning bolts and joltvelins (lame pun I know) at Silho, but the latter just dodged them, allowing Voltaire to tire himself out. With their conversation, it became obvious their dislike for eachother stems from Voltaire and several unseen colleagues - "siblings," likely more experiments - trying to kill Silho. Voltaire was the only survivor of this assassination attempt against Silho, and as such, each one now desires the other's blood.

Voltaire was overwhelmed when Silho used up all his personal Menokium stores to shoot out his quills in a ballista-like fashion. Voltaire had likewise used up all his Menokium during his ferocious attack - all part of Silho's plan - and so, could not escape. Voltaire was viciously struck down by the attack, impaled in numerous spots and the only reason he didn't die instantly was the fact his chest was extra-reinforced, keeping his heart from being punctured.

As he lay dying, Tanicius began to inject him with Menokium, apparently having learned from Voltaire's dying thoughts where he had left the rest of it. Tanicius then used his ability to implant thoughts to shape Voltaire's dreams, able to do so because in such a crippled state, even Tanicius could do so skillfully.

In his dream, he met his deceased brother, Florence. Being based on Voltaire's memories, he was exactly as Florence would be - kind and loving, but more than willing to use harsh words to do his role as older brother, looking out for Voltaire. While Voltaire said he missed his siblings so much, Florence coldly replied that it made no sense for Voltaire then, to kill his final sibling. Voltaire was angry, saying he had to exact vengeance... but Florence continued to reveal that the brothers' deaths had all been their fault. Voltaire showed signs of doubt, the words seeming to sink in, making him question if he had done the wrong thing this whole time...

The epiphany, it turned out, had actually been a subconscious desire of Voltaire's - to have a family again - but he denied it out of fear of dishonoring his siblings' memories. With some kind parting words from the illusion of Florence, Voltaire was convinced to throw away his vengeful desires, and try to reconnect to the last bit of family he had left.
